Benefits of a Virtual Personal Assistant vs. an In-Person Personal Assistant
Both virtual and in-person personal assistants can provide support that will unburden your day and organize your life. Because all of our assistants are based in your city, you’ll never have to sacrifice a personalized connection because of differing time zones.
A benefit of having an in-person personal assistant is that they can handle tasks like running errands, returning packages, and home organization.
A benefit of a virtual personal assistant is that many of our personal assistants who are looking for strictly remote work are more experienced with administration and executive support (and looking less for the home-based, errand-type tasks). You may also be able to cast a wider net of candidates who have the skills you need if they are not restricted to living in your immediate area (for example, you could work with a Venice-based assistant because a commute to DTLA would not be an issue).

FAQs
-
Personal assistants free up your time by handling home and office tasks that burden your day. They become a valuable right-hand who can support your busy life by managing low-level tasks so you can focus on higher-level projects (including your business, your family, and enjoying your life!) and ultimately have a better work-life balance.
-
Begin by completing our Client Questionnaire which will help you explain the tasks you need done and your preferences. We will then select personal assistant matches based on the information you provide and send your candidates straight to your inbox for you to review. Choose up to 5 candidates and provide us with your availability and we’ll set up video interviews.
Then, select your favorite candidate to hire. 95% of our clients find a successful match. After our placement fee is paid, we’ll connect you directly with your hire so you can get started. It’s that simple!
-
You pay your personal assistant their hourly wages directly. We do not facilitate payments, or take a cut of their hourly rate. Our services fees are separate from what you pay your personal assistant for their work.
-
Typically, a personal assistant will charge $25-$30/hr. We don’t recommend offering lower than $20/hr. If you are looking to hire a part-time executive assistant, or a candidate with extensive experience, you should expect to pay a minimum of $30/hr.
-
Our part-time personal assistants are looking for up to 25 hours per week. Many clients working with our personal assistants offer between 5-10 hrs/wk, so we happily work with clients who have fewer hours to offer.
-
Our matching process ensures the selection of candidates who have the right experience for your needs. We match our personal assistants with you based on your mutually-aligned interests and industry experience, or transferable skills from another industry to yours. If we don’t believe an assistant could do the job you’re looking for, we won’t recommend them to you.
-
We do not conduct background checks as California's "Ban the Box" Assembly Bill 1008 prevents background checks from being conducted before an offer of employment is on the table. Since the candidates are not The Middle’s employees, we are not legally allowed to perform the background check. However, we do conduct reference checks.
Additionally, as part of our screening, all candidates are pre-interviewed by Gracie personally. Post-interview, they must complete an "eligibility assignment" that assesses how they research, organize and communicate information/online tasks.
-
It can be a fairly quick process! We strive to provide matches within 2-4 days, though in some cases it can take up to 2 weeks (if we are currently onboarding new candidates who may be a match). Then it is up to you how fast we set up interviews, as those are based on your availability. We’ve had clients who have hired a personal assistant within a week, while others have taken up to 6 weeks (we don’t recommend stretching the process out this long, as we cannot guarantee how long candidates remain available prior to hire, and we don’t want you to lose your perfect PA!).

Interview Questions for a Virtual or In-Person Personal Assistant
During an interview, we recommend connecting on expectations around availability and what working together would look like. You want to try to understand what will make (& keep) them invested. Additionally, anything that is specific to what any future growth/other duties may look like (if at all), would be good to gauge candidates' interest in. You can certainly add more insight into your life! We have found that candidates who are interested in the client's world are more successful pairings.
Take note of how you communicate with each candidate. Does conversation flow or are there misunderstandings/do you need to repeat yourself/rephrase often? Communication styles can vary so it's good to note if it feels you are meshing well (that's where the matchmaking part of this comes in).
Here are a few questions to get you started:
What interests you about this position?
What prior experience have you had that transfers to this position?
I need [insert your needs here] - how will that fit into your life? Why do you feel uniquely equipped to fill those needs?
What is your current availability? Let’s discuss what working together would look like on a week-to-week basis.
